Many job seekers are unnerved by the lack of control they feel during their search. After an interview they wait while someone they barely know makes decisions that will profoundly affect their livelihoods. Human resources expert Ian Ziskin discusses these and other frustrations in his article “Life in the Slow Lane: Lessons Learned for the Bumpy Road Ahead.” Ziskin, who sits on RiseSmart’s Strategic Advisory Council, lays out strategies for navigating the frustrations of a job search along with helpful examples from his own experience.
Ziskin advises candidates awaiting contact after an interview to be patient, and even offers a formula. “Multiply time frames by a factor of three,” Ziskin advises. “If someone tells you it will take a week to get back to you, assume it will take three.”
While it can seem like every second is a dollar lost, accepting the uncertainly can make the delay far more productive. Ziskin recommends using the time to “continue networking, research other opportunities, and interview elsewhere.” Being paralyzed by one opportunity can sap our motivation to explore others.
And while there are few things worse than waiting all that time and then being told the company is choosing a different candidate, Ziskin points out, “It’s more about good fit than good feelings.” He says, “We all want to be liked … however, being liked is only a small part of the selection process.”
In an ideal world, a candidate could walk into an interview and dazzle the employer with their sterling resume and professional demeanor. But this is almost never the way it works out. Recruiters are human beings full of biases and preferences that were formed long before this interview. That’s part of the reason why the best candidates don’t always get the offers they deserve. Even when a candidate hits it off with the recruiter, that doesn’t mean they are a fit for the job.
So while it may sting to not be chosen, Ziskin stresses that job seekers should never assume there is something wrong with them. A job search is a process in which it is impossible to control all the potential variables.
